This amendment aims to ensure that when rules are set for artificial intelligence systems serving as safety components in vehicles, authorities must consider specific safety requirements outlined in the AI Act, ensuring these systems meet established safety and reliability standards determined by the European Union regulation.
The amendment particularly applies to artificial intelligence systems that are used as safety components within vehicles, meaning the systems are directly responsible for protecting the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users, and must therefore meet additional safety standards defined within the AI Act.
Chapter III, Section 2 of the AI Act sets out specific safety and reliability requirements for high-risk AI systems, including standards for clear documentation, testing, accuracy, robustness, and transparency, ensuring these systems are safe, reliable, and operate predictably when installed in vehicles.
The authorities that adopt the implementing acts for Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 will be responsible for ensuring compliance with these additional requirements; they will verify that vehicle AI safety components fulfill all necessary conditions specified by the AI Act, maintaining the safety of individuals and communities using and interacting with vehicles.
