Categories of Personal Data

In the training “What is Personal Data?” we defined personal data, but did not distinguish between the different categories of personal data.

In this training, you will learn about these different categories of personal data and the nuances that distinguish non-sensitive from sensitive personal data.

Course Topics

Lesson 1) Non-sensitive Personal Data

We will focus on the concept of non-sensitive personal data, which falls under the category often referred to as simply personal data. This contrasts with sensitive personal data, also known as special categories of personal data, which is the subject of lesson 2 in this awareness training.

We list several examples of non-sensitive personal information and explain why they are personal data to give you a better understanding of what personal data could be.

Lesson 2) Sensitive Personal Data

Building on what you learned about non-sensitive personal data, it’s important to differentiate it from what is known as sensitive personal data, especially if your job involves handling this type of information.

This lesson discusses the special restrictions on how a company can process sensitive personal data.

Lesson 3) Children, Criminal Offenses, and Confidential Information

To wrap up our exploration of the various categories of personal data, this lesson will concentrate on the identification of the processing of children’s data, criminal offences, and confidential personal data.

These categories require special attention because of their nature and the high level of protection that the GDPR mandates.
